Question How to recover data from an external HDD of 1.5Tb capacity

    Hello,

My friend's External HDD- Segate made of 1.5Tb capacity have gone bad. It is detected by Windows, but an attempt to delete/copy data is not always successful.

An attempt to use Acronis disk image didn't worked as it gave read error.

Now is there a way to recover the data using any paid or free software?

    Thanks, Grr

You said, its being detected by windows. Does it show all the files and folders too in windows?

You should try using a latest ubuntu live CD/DVD and hopefully if things are not as bad as we think you can recover it.

If it fails, then we can go for some other backup solutions which we can discuss later.

Yes, it shows all files+folders in windows...was able to delete some files to free up some space also.

How would ubuntu live CD/DVD help?

LOL, I didnt expected this question from you Grr.

Well, You can just use ubuntu Live CD to run Ubuntu on your system without installing it on your system with your HDD plugged in and then you can try to copy the files and folders to take backup. Often when windows fails , Linux (ubuntu here) does detect them and can be copied. Give a try and hopefully it can be recovered.
