Open "My Computer" Right click on the drive. Click on Properties> Tools .

Under Error Checking, you will find Check now, click on it and tick both the checkboxes and click on start

Ashwin thanks for the suggestions but I'm well past that stage.

Tried all of the listed remedies even some more, like complete defragmentation using different apps, Raxco's PerfectDisk, O&O defrag but the harddisk works fine, has no bad sectors and is a relatively new harddisk, so age is also not a factor.

But only when My Computer is clicked and PC tries to read the volume labels the click sound is heard.

I guess the strange character in the volume label is causing this.

I want to know if u could help me change this label permanently with any app, acronis and paragon have failed in this regard, if you have come across any other app please suggest
