Quoted from
Win7DSFilterTweakerQ: I am not getting thumbnails for .mkv and .flv files on Windows 7
A: By default Windows 7 uses its own decoders for video formats such as H.264. The Microsoft decoders do not work properly when Explorer want to generate a thumbnail.
The solution is to set ffdshow as the preferred decoder for H.264 video. First make sure that H.264 is enabled on the Codecs page in ffdshow video decoder configuration by selecting either libavcodec or ffmpeg-mt. Then use the Win7DSFilterTweaker tool to set it as the preferred decoder in Windows 7.
After you have changed the settings, you need to reboot to make the settings take effect in Windows Explorer.
it worked all right, flv was perfect, but with the mkv files i just see black thumbnails,
but i ve read you cant do anything about the black thumbnails is it??
