After installing Windows 7, I no longer have Multi Media Icons....however they do show when a card is inserted

Perhaps by default, the notification icons are off in your taskbar notification settings. Just enable it from there.

I don't believe that there is an option to see those type of notifications in the customise taskbar

Try navigating to :

Control Panel>>All Control Panel Items >> Notification Area Icons

May be you are right. The icons are visible only when you insert the removable drives.
