Which format is good, AVI or MPEG ?

I'm downloading videos from Vimeo.com and want to know which output format is good, AVI or MPEG?
Good with respect to:
1. filesize
2. quality
3. Video quality

It depends on the codec used.
From the above details Avi will have superior quality. Coz the Bit rate of video is higher and it uses H264 encoding

ll go for AVI format, as I have large hdd..

AVI container also supports other codecs like Xvid and Divx, which are best known for their maximum compression. AVI + DivX/Xvid can result in good quality less output file size.

when i rip/convert mine.. i tend to do avi with xvid/divx.. and the qual is pretty good.. so that would be what i would go for myself
