    Strange hard disk label

That partition label was Data but the D letter automatically changes to that strange character

Used acronis and paragon apps to change the label but it resets back to the same sign

Any idea why this is happening? and any solutions?

PS: The harddisk makes a strange clicking sound when My Computer is opened and volumes labels are being displayed, during other times the harddisk works fine

A noisy hard disk could be a sign of a bad sector.

    Run checkdisk in XP.

Open "My Computer" Right click on the drive. Click on Properties> Tools .

Under Error Checking, you will find Check now, click on it and tick both the checkboxes and click on start

PS: try reading this article by Microsoft

Ashwin thanks for the suggestions but I'm well past that stage.

Tried all of the listed remedies even some more, like complete defragmentation using different apps, Raxco's PerfectDisk, O&O defrag but the harddisk works fine, has no bad sectors and is a relatively new harddisk, so age is also not a factor.

But only when My Computer is clicked and PC tries to read the volume labels the click sound is heard.

I guess the strange character in the volume label is causing this.

I want to know if u could help me change this label permanently with any app, acronis and paragon have failed in this regard, if you have come across any other app please suggest

    Thanks

Instead of naming it, why not trying deleting the label. Just a suggestion which may work

Are you logged in as the administrator while making these changes?

Did you try rebooting after changing the label?

    Try googling abt this issue
