Windows 7 says laptop battery need to be replaced

My 1.5 years old laptop having Windows 7 is giving a system error message that battery needs to be replaced as it cannot hold the full charge.

Sometime laptop gets powered off instantly just as if no battery is there. A red cross icon is also shown on battery icon in task bar.

    Any ideas?

I have the same problem, Windows 7 and Ubuntu tell me my battery is old and needs to be replaced, however I can still use the laptop like 5 mins just with the battery.

You can disable the warning on Windows 7 SP1, but I agree with Mike if you can you should buy a new one.

    1. Remove the battery & use the laptop on AC power, possibly from a UPS to avoid abrupt shutdown.

    2. Test the battery on another laptop. & use another battery on your laptop to ensure nothing is wrong with it
