Get a taste of the next Ubuntu operating system.

A new version of Ubuntu is released every six months, but Ubuntu 10.04 will be a little special. That's because it is marked as Long Term Support (LTS). Most versions of Ubuntu get 18 months of security updates, but this will be supported for 3 years. So if you do not like upgrading this is the version for you.
Before we go any further, we should point out that this is a version of Ubuntu 10.04, not an official release. It has worked without any major problems on our test machine but it should not be used on an important computer. That said, if you have a spare computer, it is worth giving a go.
The appearance of Ubuntu has been improved and there are some more colourful wallpapers and a wallpaper group that cycles through a selection of images automatically like Windows 7 does. The main top and bottom bars of the screen will look familiar to anyone who has used previous versions, although one or two icons have moved around.
There is one major change that will become obvious as soon as any software is started. The minimise, maximise and close buttons have been moved from the top right-hand corner of windows to the top left-hand corner. It's quite a bold move, breaking with the convention of Windows, Mac and other versions of Linux, but it could come in very handy on smaller notebooks as these button will always be in view.
It is not a must have download, yet, but there is a good indication that Ubuntu 10.04 will be the best release yet. It is scheduled for release in April 2010.

An exciting preview of the next Ubuntu operating system
